There will be some special high stakes action in the North American Poker Tour (NAPT) this year: sponsor by Pokerstars. Pokerstars has announced that the US event will include a special $25 000 buy-in High Roller Bounty Shootout to be held at the Venetian in Las Vegas on February 23rd.

Played to a No Limit Texas Hold’em format, the Shootout is expected to attract many of the big international names in poker and will take place over a two day period. Poker Players must win their tables in order to move on to the next round, as is typical in a shootout, and each contestant has a $5 000 bounty on his or her head. Adding to the excitement, Pokerstars has added $100 000 as a prize for the winner of the most bounties.

PokerStars Head of Global Events Jeffrey Haas says: *We want to try new things, different formats, and unique events that make our players happy. This is sure to be a hit with both our players and the people who watch on television.*

The rules and payment schedules of the LAPT mean that each player who reaches the final table will pocket $50 000. After the final table is paid off, the remaining prize pool, less the bounties, will be awarded entirely to the winner. Arrangements are already in hand to televise and later screen the final tablke action.

This year is the NAPT’s first outing, and it has so far done extraordinarily well; the Caribbean Adventure was the series’ first stop and pulled in a main event field of 1 529 players, with the winner scooping up $2.2 million.

Following the NAPT’s Venetian epic, the tournament series will travel east to Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. NAPT Mohegan Sun takes place between April 7th and 11th and features a $5 000 buy-in, the same price tag as the Venetian Main Event.

Backed by the online poker industry, U.S. legislators are gearing up for a big push to legalize Internet gambling before the end of a six-month reprieve, according to a report in the Washington Post.

After Sen. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) successfully fought for the six-month period to prepare a proposal to regulate the booming industry, which would provide a windfall profit to the federal government, lobbyists backed by the $16 billion a year industry are working to push for legalization.

“I think there’s a growing realization in Washington that prohibition probably isn’t going to work, just like prohibitions throughout history have not worked,” said John Pappas, the poker group’s executive director. “There needs to be a more common-sense approach, because it’s not going away.”

But the effort faces opposition on numerous fronts, from social conservatives to professional sports leagues. A law banning online gambling was passed by a Republican Congress in 2006 (although the law has yet to be strictly enforced) and the NFL says legalization would encourage criminal activity. But a Democratic power swing and a prolonged recession may to be changing minds on the issue. The Obama Adminstration issued a six-month stay for online gambling in December so ways to create revenue could be explored. Estimates say a 2 percent tax would net $42 billion over a 10-year period.

Pro-gambling groups are putting their money where their mouths are to the tune of $4 million over the past year to put together a political alliance in Washington. The groups’ combned members total 1.2 million people, they say, and they have sent out 300,000 letters and e-mails to Congressmen. Still, opposition groups are numerous and they also plan to lobby Congress to keep Internet gambling from becoming legal. Focus on the Family Action, a conservative group that strongly opposed to all forms of gambling, argue that legalization is the start of a hostile takeover by the gambling industry.

“This would go outside the walls of a brick-and-mortar casino, outside the walls of a convenience store lottery,” said Chad Hillis, a gambling researcher for Focus on the Family Action, “and into the living rooms and homes of all Americans.”

Barney Frank, who has collected more than $100,000 from gambling proponents since 2007, has several allies in his fight to legalize gambling, some from across the aisle in the Republican Party. Rick Muny, a die-hard conservative and an avid online poker player, believes his party should look at the logic. ‘There’s a part of the party that always believes this isn’t something people should do,” Muny said. “But I think it behooves the party to be a little more broad-minded on this issue.”

Have fun gambling online!!

Bet on the 2010 Super Bowl online

If you can’t make it out to Miami, the next best place to be this Super Bowl weekend is Las Vegas. After you’ve found your lucky sportsbook at your favorite casino and you’ve placed your winning bet on the big game, you can make your way over to the slots for a little pre-game action and then it’s party time!

Las Vegas awaits its biggest betting day of the year this Sunday when Super Bowl XLIV kicks off. This year’s matchup could attract enough action to break the all-time betting handle amount of $94M in total wagers. That record belongs to the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl in 2006. Last year the country really knew it was in a recession when the final tallies were in, and betting on the Super Bowl had fallen off by nearly 10% from the previous five-year average.

With so much action on one game, Vegas casinos battle fiercely to get that action into their sportsbook. Every casino in town will be trying to out-do the next with elaborate Super Bowl parties and an array of discounts and freebies to entice gamers to have their Super Bowl experience with them. The action comes in many forms from straight game bets to parlay cards, with lots of different prop betting options.

For all Vegas style action, check out Bodog’s online casino or Bodog Sports Book

The Devils were in a 2-5-1 slump coming into the hockey game. They only had 12 goals within that span. New Jersey coach Lemaire moved Zubrus up to the top line with Zajac and Parise. This is only his third game after not being able to play at 30 games with a broken knee cap. Thus, a decision by Lemaire really paid off when the three quickly came together and gave the Devils the momentum after Toronto lead earlier.

Everything just going for the Devils

Toronto had the first goal in the game courtesy of rookie Carl Gunnarsson. He made a goal early in the 6:11 mark, firing a shot from the left point that went over the glove of Brodeur and under the crossbar. The lead only lasted 59 seconds after Parise pulled the score even for the Devils. Parise made a “hard shot that went wide of the net.” With the puck moving across the crease to Parise, Zubrus then “snared the carom off the end board,” giving Parise an easy chance to score.

Lead defenseman Ian White came up the puck again on the second tally of Parise at 13:40 in regulation. Zajac had an opportunity to clear White’s not-so-good clearing pass and Zajac immediately whipped the puck over to Zubrus, who then passed it on to Parise. Parise defeated Jonas Gustavsson to give the Devils star a two-goal game for the fifth time this season and the 20th time in Parise’s career.

Parise played an inspired game and came close to making a hat trick early in the second period on the Devils’ powerplay, but Gustavsson beat him twice which also included a “sparkling glove save on Parise’s blast from the right circle.” Four minutes later, Parise came charging into the Maple Leafs Zone but a diving stop by Gustavsson prevented him from reaching his third goal in the game. Zubrus also had a good comeback game when he scored his first goal at 9:22 from a two-on-one break with Zajac.

Toronto trying to get back

With 11:47 in regulation, Gustavsson was replaced by Toskala which gave Toronto a brief lift that led to Colton Orr’ making a goal at exactly 14:41. Orr is more of an enforcer than a scorer. He gloved down a pass from Jamal Mayers and hot ahead of the Devils defense. Orr then “whipped a shot past Brodeur” for his first goal after 29 games to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Devils then came back up with 2:41 remaining in the last period in regulation as the rookie Davis made his first goal. Toronto went on a serious comeback when Alexei Ponikarovsky stripped the puck from Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador to cut the lead to 4-3 with 5:01 left. Matt Stajan then tied the game with 1:31 left in regulation.

The game ended in favor of the Devils as Zajac, from the top of the right circle, released a shot for a powerplay goal.

The emotional Captain Jack kept his cool in his return to Golden State team but this time to beat them. Stephen Jackson is known to easily lose control of his emotions on the court, but in his return to the Oracle Arena, he was rather calm. If he continues to play like this, the Bobcats have a good chance to make it to the Eastern Conference playoff.

Captain Jack doing amazing

Stephen Jackson is a known scorer and team captain back in Golden State but his trade to Charlotte changed him a lot. He spent four seasons with the Warriors before running some trouble with the management in the offseason. This led to a demand for his trade, which landed him in Charlotte. He was booed but he didn’t let this affect him as he scored 30 points and led the Bobcats to victory. He didn’t show any sign of letting his emotion take control of him. He even made a 3-pointer, leading the Bobcats 107-88.

Bobcats doing it all the way

Guards D.J. Augustin and Raymond Felton both added 14 points each for the Bobcats who are now 23-22 in the season. They have won 10 of their last 15 games and are now tied with Chicago for the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference. The focus on this game was also on Gerald Wallace. In the franchise’s brief appearance in the league, Wallace became the first player in the franchise to be named to the All-Star team. Wallace scored 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, making a double-double that helped beat the Warriors 121-110.

On the other hand, three of the Warriors had 20 plus points. Corey Maggette had 25 points, while Monta Ellis and rookie Stephen Curry had 22 points each for the Warriors who are now 13-32 in the season. The Warriors had lost five of their last six games.

In the game

The last player of the Bobcats to be called during the pregame introduction was Jackson. He was greeted with boos and every time Jackson touches the ball. But he responded to the crowd by making a dunk and a short hook shot early in the game. Jackson unfortunately missed five of his first seven shots but recovered from it by scoring 17 points in the first half alone. He was assigned to guard Monta Ellis the whole night who is now one of the premier scorers for Golden State since Jackson left.

It is now clear who the real winner is in the trade between Charlotte and Golden State. The trade for Jackson also included Acie Law going to Charlotte. This is in exchange for Raja Bell and Vladimir Radmanovic. Since the trade, the Bobcats are now 20-16 in the season. There has been a boost in the scoring average of more than 15 points. The Warriors, on the other hand, is only 10-26 since they traded Jackson, decreasing their scoring average by 5.2 points a game.

Mark Sanchez was reported to have visited orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews very recently. The Jets player is considering having surgery done on his left knee and the visit was supposed to help him decide whether to push through with the procedure. He is expected to announce his decision within next week.

Sanchez’s knee injury

His left knee was injured in August 2008 when he was still in college at Southern California. The operation, if he will choose to have it, will fix the ligament that stabilizes the patella. The patella is more commonly known as the knee cap, the thick piece of bone that covers and protects the knee joint. A knee surgery usually means that the player will be sidelined for at least two months.

Sanchez also suffered injury in his right knee during a fairly recent game against Buffalo in Toronto in which the Jets won. He suffered a mild sprain on the posterior cruciate ligament, making him miss the next game. Kellen Clemens, the Jets’ backup quarterback played instead, leading the team to a road victory over Tampa Bay.

He was able to return in the game after that, playing with a brace on, though the team suffered a loss against Atlanta. Sanchez was able to play the rest of his scheduled games without any hitch. Dr. Andrews has also examined Sanchez’s right knee and concurred with the Jets doctors’ decision that it does not require surgery at the moment.

It was Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum who decided to trade up and choose Mark Sanchez during the draft held last April of 2009. The decision served as the launching point for the rise of the team to the American Football Conference title game.

Mark Sanchez’s top playing records

During his rookie season, Sanchez threw for 2,444 yards and twelve touchdowns. He proved to be an asset for the Jets with a quarterback rating of 92.7 in the playoffs. He also made a team record for the postseason with his 80-yard touchdown pass to Edwards during the 30-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the championship game.

Tannenbaum echoed concerns regarding the young quarterback missing some playing time but he points that the medical procedure is necessary. In future games after he recovers from surgery, Sanchez will be able to play with more stability and less worry. The team’s general manager further emphasizes that the procedure is nothing serious to be worried about, just making small tweaks on the player’s injured knee. “It’s going to be much more preventive, strengthening, things like that,” Tannenbaum explains. While a visit to Dr. Andrews may sound alarming when made in reference to a player, the team manager highlights that they’re just addressing some issues while it’s still early and that he expects Sanchez to be well before training camp.

Major League Baseball players have joined in the worldwide effort to help Haiti recover from the devastating earthquake that left the whole country in ruins. Through the MLB Players Trust, one million dollars is being earmarked for both immediate and long-term relief and recovery aid. Initial help will be channeled through Esperanza International and Medicines for Humanity with $100,000 going to each organization.

The Players Trust

The Players Trust has been working with Esperanza International since 2006 with regards to helping 35,000 women and families in the Dominican Republic with their microfinance program. In the aftermath of the Haiti quake, the organization has led 150 local organizations to coordinate relief efforts and provide the victims with food, water, bedding, and hygiene kits.

Since 2002, the Players Trust has provided medicines and health services to the Dominican Republic through Medicines For Humanity. Currently, MFH is supplying the critically required medicines and medical supplies needed by the survivors. The organization is also supporting a medical team that is treating around 300 patients daily.

Realizing that it will take years and more financial resources to rebuild Haiti, the remaining money pledged by the Players Trust will be used for long-term projects. Through Esperanza International, assistance to Haiti’s economic development will be provided through housing for families, educational opportunities for children, and income-generating initiatives such as a microfinance program to free these families from poverty. For its part, Medicines For Humanity will actively help in the efforts to rebuild health services in Haiti, especially those that are geared towards maternal and child health.

Other charitable causes

This pledge matches the Players Trust’s largest financial contribution in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In 2005, this charitable foundation, administered by the members of the Major League Baseball Players Association, also gave one million dollars to launch the Volunteers of America Rental Housing Development Fund. Along with contributions from other organizations, the donation was used to develop affordable rental housing in the Gulf Coast region. The Players Trust also provides resources, both financial and in volunteer work, to other causes close to the hearts of the members. This foundation is the first of its kind that was established and administered by players of professional sports.

In a statement, MLBPA (Major League Baseball Players Association) Representative and Players Trust Trustee Curtis Granderson of the New York Yankees declared how honored they are to pledge long-term support to the people of Haiti. He further noted that the players association, through their foundation, is committed to help and support their chosen non-profit organizations as they help Haiti in its long road to recovery.

David Valle, President of Esperanza International, and Tim Bilodeau, Executive Director of Medicines for Humanity, have acknowledged the gift from the MLBPA.

Senators Jack Kibbie (D-Emmetsburg) and Steve Sodders (D-State Center) are currently pushing for the legalization of betting on sports events. In separate bills, the two senators initiated measures to give the state’s Racing and Gaming Commission the authority to offer sports betting to patrons of state-licensed racetracks and riverboat casinos. Currently, Iowa is covered by a federal prohibition on sports betting.

The federal prohibition on sports betting

The Federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 have prohibited sports betting in all but a few states. Under this law, only the states of Delaware, Montana, Nevada, and Oregon are allowed to offer sports betting on professional team sports like football and basketball. Also covered by the federal act are wagering on college sports teams. There have been efforts to change the law over the years and the bills filed by the two senators are the latest.

While pushing for the same goal, there are slight differences in the senators’ bills. Sen. Sodder’s bill seeks to allow gambling but only on professional sports. On the other hand, Sen. Kibbie’s bill proposes to also include amateur sports betting. At the bottom line of both bills is that implementation shall take effect once the Racing and Gaming Commission determines that federal law will does not prohibit betting on amateur and professional sports in the state. As Sen. Kibbie reveals, “The bill is contingent on the approval of federal legislation”.

The senator has speculated that legalization of sports betting will generate up to $100 million in gaming revenue for the state, provided that it will be taxed at the same rate as other betting avenues. He added that there are people who don’t bet on other things but are very much interested in making wagers on their favorite sports and teams.

Sports betting as source of tax revenue

Sen. Sodders have pointed out the huge amounts of money being wagered on the Super Bowl year after year and highlights the number of people who regularly bet on sports events. He also mentioned the existence of illegal betting operations and that the money generated by these enterprises will be of use to the state if channeled to state-regulated outlets once the prohibition is lifted.

“We think that we ought to be able to regulate that here and have sports betting if Iowa desires to do that in our casinos,” the senator said further. “Why not let them do that betting here than in other states that are getting the revenue for that?”

Sen. Sodders plan to get the support of the other members of Iowa’s congressional delegation to get the ball rolling in lifting the federal prohibition. The senator hopes that his and Sen. Kibbie’s initial moves will start interest and gain momentum in legalizing sports betting.

Matthew Etherington is confident he is winning his battle with a gambling problem. Former West Ham man Etherington, who joined Stoke 13 months ago, has been one of his club’s most impressive performers this season.

The 28-year-old is playing without the stress of gambling and revealed he is taking steps to manage his addiction, telling the Daily Mail: “I’ve never really spoken about it, but I go twice a week to Gambling Anonymous in Birmingham. I’ll do that for the rest of my life.”

He added: “You are just meeting like-minded people and you talk about things that help keep you off gambling. It has been a big help.

“I had to do something about it – and I’ve done that. Now I’d like to get on with my life. I would be the first to admit I had problems with gambling and I never hide that fact. “My problems had been well documented and I would like to think they are long behind me now. I’ve got over that and come out the other side.”

Macau’s results were even better than most expected

Shares of Macau casino operators rose on Tuesday on reports that gambling revenue in the enclave rose to a new high in January, signalling sustained growth in the world’s largest gambling market.

Macau has been thriving in recent months while Las Vegas continues to struggle with the economic conditions in the US. The CityCenter project from MGM was supposed to help boost numbers, but as of yet those increases have not been seen. In Macau, on the other hand, the casinos are once again thriving after the Chinese government eased travel restrictions that were place on residents of the mainland. With the eased restrictions, Macau casinos are once again packed and are bringing in huge revenue figures.

The news in not all bad for Las Vegas casino operators. Wynn Resorts, MGM Mirage, and Las Vegas Sands all have properties in Macau, and are benefiting greatly from the recent boom. Wynn and Sands both had initial public offerings in Asia towards the latter part of 2009.

MGM is set to become the next in line to hold an IPO in Asia. That is expected to take place later this year, at which time MGM will join Wynn and Sands with a listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum yesterday confirmed March 27th as the official grand opening of the new US $2 billion Meydan Grandstand and Race Track — the day of the world’s richest horse race: the Dubai World Cup. However, venue organizers say it’s ready now and it will host Dubai’s first race of the season tonight.

“We’ve seen some of the world’s finest talents in horseracing take to the tracks…and we’re excited at the responses we’ve had to the conditions and facilities we’ve built,” said Meydan Chairman of the Board and CEO Saeed Humaid Al-Tayer. “Feedback and suggestions from our partners in the industry is something we’ve always heeded and Meydan is a result of this collaborative effort. We are indeed excited to showcase it to the world when the races begin.”

A 1,200-metre turf race worth $1 million was added to the racing season’s biggest event, making the 15th Dubai World Cup an eight-race meeting, hosting four Group 1, two Group 2, one Group 3 thoroughbred races and one Group 1 Purebred Arabian race – all worth a combined $26 million in prize money.

So far, the Los Angeles Lakers have had the most impressive record in the NBA, with a rating of 33-10. While it was not always smooth sailing for the team, the Lakers have managed well enough since June.

Nonetheless, the Lakers team today seems to be a far cry from the one which had bagged the 2009 championship for the NBA. Another defensive step forward has led them to be known as the third best defensive team in this league. This has also resulted in their ranking as the second-best defensive team that Kobe Bryant has been associated with.

The Lakers’ poor rankings

On the contrary, the current Lakers team is among the least offensive as far as Bryant’s career is concerned. The current team ranking is 10, with just a score of 105.9, for every 100 possessions. Simply put, this score is just 1.9 points higher than the average in the league. While there have been other Lakers teams which have performed poorly in the league, none of them have obtained such a low score on the offensive side.

It is rather difficult to imagine how a team as talented as the Lakers could perform poorly on the offensive front and fare worse than the Blazers, Raptors, or the Grizzlies. After all, Bryant, Pau Gasol, Ron Artest, and Lamar Odom are all part of the team. Why the poor offensive ranking?

Possible explanations

Nonetheless, a closer look into the losses suffered by the Lakers this season will reveal how offense has been a huge dilemma for the team this season. Seven out of the ten losses, they were not able to score a point per possession. Phil Jackson, coach to the Los Angeles Lakers, has admitted how offense has become an issue for the team lately. Jackson also admitted that for the past couple of weeks, the team has been in discussion as to how to address the problem promptly and effectively.

Several factors are being looked into as to why the Lakers have not had a stellar performance on court this season. First off, Pau Gasol, the second-best player for the team, has been absent for a total of 17 games this season. It has been speculated how the presence of Gasol on the team has sparked a huge difference in terms of offensive performance; with the Lakers team ranked fourth in the entire league whenever Gasol played.

Another factor which has attributed to the slow offensive performance of the team for this season is Kobe Bryant’s avulsion fracture on his right index finger. This took place just recently when the Lakers were up against the Timberwolves. Since the injury, Bryant has been more cautious on the court, not driving to the basket as often or as fast he normally would.

The Washington Capitals has more than a few heroes on board, and this is not to speak only of “Alex the Great”, Alex Ovechkin. During one game when Ovechkin merely did damage to Jack Hillen’s countenance, it was Alexander Semin that scored a couple of goals, leading the Capitals to win 7-2, seventh straight against the New York Islanders. This bout was held at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum last Tuesday night.

More about the Washington Capitals’ wins

On the next game, the Washington Capitals expects to add another to their list of consecutive wins, making it eighth in a row as it starts on a 3-game homestand versus the Anaheim Ducks. As for the New York Islanders, two consecutive losses have followed their 6 wins on Long Island.

It was during the first period of the Washington Capitals that Semin’s tallies arrived, chasing goalie Dwayne Roloson to the end. While the Capitals were able to score seven goals during this game, Ovechkin was not responsible for any of these goals, despite being a yearly Hart Trophy candidate. Ovechkin remained scoreless after ten attempts on the goal and having four shots blocked.

It was Brendan Morrison that gave the Capitals a lead of 1-0, scoring his very first goal since the 23rd of December, spanning a total of 15 games. At that instance all that Washington needed to reach to the scoreboard was 65 seconds. Following Morrison’s win in a face-off that took place at the Islander’s turf, John Erskine was able to forward a slap shot from Morrison, securing him his 11th goal. As Semin was able to gain control much ahead of Isles winger Trent Hunter, he twice increased Washington’s lead after scoring his 22nd goal of the season.

At 6:03, Rob Schremp halved the deficit on turf authority by taking a pass from Doug Weight, as he let go of a snap shot, beating Jose Theodore and making it 2-1. This was the sixth goal of Rob Schremp for the season.

During the concluding 1:47 of the period, the Caps scored twice, taking a 4-1 lead. As Sean Bergenheim suffered from a holding penalty, Mike Knuble was able to take top advantage of the game, scoring his own rebound against Roloson. Meanwhile Semin was able to outmaneuver Bruno Gervais, allowing him to score his second goal of the evening, with just a mere 5.2 seconds on the clock. It was during the beginning of the second period that Rick DiPietro replaced Roloson, scoring only four goals among the 12 shots.

Hillen’s bloody mess

John Erskin meanwhile put an end to the scoring deficiency as he maneuvered his way on the ice unscathed, scoring 5-1, after a scoreless series of performances beginning Jan 19, 2008. After Alex Ovechkin injured Hillen, the latter departed the game with 2:31 left during the first period. There was a pool of blood left on the ice where Hillen was whacked by Ovechkin, and after reaching the dressing room, the New York Islanders defenseman was taken to the hospital for tests.
