Legalized gambling in bars

The state Senate has voted for more gambling in Indiana. The pull tabs currently available are sold by the Hoosier Lottery. They cost a dollar or less and you can win hundreds. Bar owners want to sell them and they got a step closer Wednesday in being able to do so.

Bar owners seeking to sell pull tabs believe they got unfair treatment by the General Assembly last year. They lost a bid to win approval for electronic gambling in bars, the so-called cherry masters, while lawmakers made it possible for clubs and fraternal organizations to sell pull tabs. Lawmakers still must figure out who should regulate the pull tabs, the alcohol and beverage commission as the bill says - or the gaming commission.

The vote was 26-to-21 to permit pull tabs in bars and taverns. All bar owners have to do is pay a licensing fee of $250. (The pull tabs won’t show up at your neighborhood bar quite yet, lawmakers must still find a compromise between House and Senate versions of the bill).
