In the three COT races which have taken place thus far this season, the COMBINED margin of victory has been less than one full second. It is too early to declare that the COT is superior to the current cars in creating great racing, but the evidence certainly suggests the project has not impaired the drama of the racing sport.
This past weekend in Phoenix, Chevrolet once again dominated a COT race, claiming four of the top-five spots (Matt Kenseth’s Ford placed fifth) and eight of the top-ten (Bobby Labonte’s Dodge claimed 8th-place) at the Phoenix track.
Jeff Gordon drove his Hendrick’s Motorsports Chevy from pole position to the Winner’s Circle, while teammate Jimmie Johnson continued his outstanding season by claiming fourth (their first and fourth finishes happen to match their current Nextel Cup standings). Tony Stewart’s Chevy challenged Gordon’s for the win but came up just short.
This weekend, the Cup heads east to the Heart of Dixie to tackle the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway for the Aaron’s 499.
Public debate will switch from the merits of the COT project to the ever-present debate about whether restrictor-plate racing has destroyed the sport. Talladega is the home of the “the big one,†with a history of crashes that have claimed twenty or more sleds at one time. As always, drivers’ nerves will be on high alert all 188 laps around this deep southern track.
Hendrick’s Motorsports has one the last three Spring races at Talladega. Johnson captured last year’s checkered-flag at the Aaron’s 499, while Gordon won the Spring races here in both 2004 and 2005.
Brian Vickers and Dale Jarrett won the Fall races here in 2006 and 2005, respectively, but both are driving Toyotas this season and they are both lower than 35th in the Cup standings this season. Only Vickers has posted a top-10 finish this season and he has only one of those at that.
Johnson nudged out Tony Stewart for last year’s Aaron’s 499 victory. Vickers finished third followed by Jeff Burton, Jamie McMurray, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards.
Burton is currently 74 points behind Gordon in the Nextel Cup standings followed by Kenseth. Stewart is seventh in the Cup standings while McMurray is 12th.
